You don't need to spend a fortune to get a brilliant 4K TV. In 2026, the sub-£500 bracket has quietly become remarkable — QLED panels, Dolby Vision HDR, and fully-featured smart TV platforms are all available without breaking the bank.
We spent two weeks testing every major 4K TV under £500 at Argos, evaluating picture quality, smart TV usability, build quality and value. Here are the four sets we'd genuinely recommend.
Quick pick: For most people, the Hisense 55" A7NQ QLED is the best value 4K TV under £500 at Argos right now — a full QLED panel with Dolby Vision for around £379.
The Hisense A7NQ is the value proposition of 2026. Getting a QLED panel with Dolby Vision and HDR10+ support for under £400 is genuinely exceptional — at this price last year, you'd be looking at basic LED sets with mediocre HDR. QLED technology means the colour volume is dramatically higher than a standard LED: reds are richer, greens more vivid, and the overall picture has a vibrancy that sets it apart from cheaper alternatives.
VIDAA U7 — Hisense's smart TV platform — has matured considerably and now carries all the essential UK streaming apps: BBC iPlayer, ITVX, Channel 4, My5, Netflix, Disney+, Apple TV+, and Amazon Prime Video. It isn't quite as polished as Google TV, but it gets the job done.
The one significant compromise is the native 60Hz panel. Sports and fast-paced action films can look slightly less smooth than on a 120Hz set, though MEMC motion processing helps. For casual viewing, streaming and movies, it simply doesn't matter.
The TCL C655K's headline feature is Google TV at a budget price. Google TV is arguably the best smart TV platform available right now — intuitive to navigate, packed with every app you'd ever want, and backed by Google's powerful recommendation engine. Getting it on a QLED screen for under £350 is a real achievement.
Picture quality is solid rather than spectacular. QLED colour technology keeps things vibrant, and Dolby Vision support ensures compatible content (Netflix, Disney+, Apple TV+) looks its best. Like the Hisense, the native 60Hz panel is the main compromise at this price point.
The hands-free Google Assistant integration is a highlight — you can control your TV by voice without even picking up the remote. In a market where many budget TVs still require physical button presses for basic controls, it feels genuinely premium.

Philips Ambilight is unlike anything else on the market at this price. The TV projects coloured light from the sides and bottom of the screen onto your wall, extending the picture into the room around you. It sounds gimmicky — but once you've watched a film with Ambilight, going back to a standard screen feels oddly flat. At Argos prices, it's available for well under £500.
Beyond Ambilight, the PUS8519 runs Google TV, offers decent peak brightness for a sunny room, and supports Dolby Vision. It's a strong all-rounder with a party trick that no other TV in this price range can match.
If you need a brilliant smaller TV — for a bedroom, kitchen or second living room — the Samsung Q60C is the one to beat at Argos. It brings Samsung's Tizen smart TV platform and QLED colour to a compact 43" chassis for under £400.
Tizen is one of the most reliable and fully-featured smart TV platforms, with all UK apps covered and an interface that most family members can figure out without consulting a manual. Samsung's QLED produces punchy, vivid colour that makes it particularly strong for sports and HDR content.
Panel technology: At this price, QLED is worth seeking out over standard LED. The colour volume improvement is significant and genuinely visible to the naked eye, particularly in dark, saturated scenes.
HDR format: Look for Dolby Vision support at a minimum — it's the most widely used premium HDR format on Netflix, Disney+ and Apple TV+. HDR10+ (used by Amazon Prime) is a bonus.
Smart TV platform: Google TV (used by TCL and Philips) is our recommendation for ease of use and app availability. Tizen (Samsung) is a close second. VIDAA (Hisense) gets the job done.
Refresh rate: All four TVs above are native 60Hz. For casual viewing and streaming, this is fine. If you're a keen gamer or sports fan, consider saving up for one of our top five picks with 120Hz panels.
Tip: Argos offers same-day collection and flexible payment options including Argos Card. You can often reserve a TV online and collect within hours from your nearest store.
